I just watched an amazing programme on TV about a volcanic rain forest in New Guinea. It was full of the most adorable furry creatures including a tree kangaroo and the biggest rat in the world ( surely related to the Giant Rat of Sumatra) and because they had never been persecuted or hunted or eaten they were absolutely tame and pickupable and strokeable. Also the longest flatworm ever seen(not quite so adorable but still.....) and a myriad of moths, huge, beautiful and one even mildly poisonous! Brilliant work BBC4!

Dreadful of me to say but this made me wonder how Camille would cope with encountering unusual large fauna. After all, remember the inventory - he loved books about the New World... But in practice, wonder would mingle with fear?

Oh yes, those books still put a knot in my stomach even now - and then of course there's always the mouse thing! He would probably prefer contact through an intermediary - imagine if anything BIT him - you could make whole mini scene out of it.
