I've just got in from work and I really want to say how brilliant my twelve year sixes are! Poor little souls have to take a grammar and punctuation test this year in May. Not one of them speaks English at home, all of them speak much better English than their parents, some of them have had not very nice refugee experiences, they write beautiful stories and now they will have to know the difference between main and subordinate clauses, adverbial and adjectival phrases reported and direct speech. They've worked so bloody hard I think they might be ok, but I look at their little faces when they have to practise yet again and I know they would much sooner be reading or writing a story or a poem and my heart aches for them.
