Ely

I decided there's no point worrying about work on my day off, so today I took myself to Ely. My photos are fairly rubbish but I am practising.
St Etheldreda is possibly my favourite saint (I don't know many) and a corruption of her name gives us the word tawdry:
Ely is named after the eels which were abundant there in the time of Hereward the Wake:

What a fascinating statue! St Etheldreda was the one who vowed perpetual virginity while being married a few times, wasn't she?

Yeah, that's the one, twice married but always a virgin, it seems that her sister, who rejoiced in the name of Sexburga, may have been even more interesting, married, ruled as a queen, had children, then succeeded Etheldreda as Abbess of Ely. Well worth googling.
