For as long as I can remember - it must be since the Thatcher era - no mainstream U.K. party has been prepared to make raising income tax a major plank in their economic policy. BUT
our NHS is considered 'unaffordable'; so is our Welfare State, leading to more and more extreme social division. People are being ghettoized because the govt. 'can't afford' housing benefit' and is encouraging the affluent to resent and demonize the poor. All of this is preventing us achieving a compassionate and cohesive society and I, for one say to Ed Milliband - 'be bold, bite the bullet, PUT UP INCOME TAX!'
